(1) What is the meaning of the name, ‘Contemplative Therapeutics’?
The name Contemplative Therapeutics™ was chosen to convey the core aims of Brendan’s spiritual direction and teaching work. The term ‘contemplative’ references the fundamental skillset and orientation toward the world that this system of spiritual development equips seekers to fully inhabit. In ancient Greek, the word we translate into English as ‘contemplation’ is theoría. The English term unfortunately doesn’t quite convey the full depth of the concept, which points toward the lived, experiential knowledge or gnōsis of a totally transformed, open, and infinitely expansive view. In fact, theoría can also be translated as ‘view’, ‘seeing’, or, ‘beholding’—in other words, it gestures toward the experience of having an illumined or divine view of things. That is the fundamental aim of all legitimate spiritual paths, if properly understood. The term ‘therapeutics’ comes from the Greek word therapeía, which means, ‘to heal’, ‘to make whole’, ‘to cure’, or, ‘to take care of’. Contemplative Therapeutics™ is thus a system and support structure which facilitates entrance into an integral, transformational contemplative view and way of life, and does so in a manner that is ‘wholing’, which brings healing to seekers in body, mind, and spirit, and brings them into a larger, conscious relational wholeness with the great family of being.
